I have always been attracted to water - living near so many springs and rivers here in North Central Florida has been extremely inspiring. Observing reflections and gazing into depths provide both aesthetic enjoyment and meditative calm for both myself and, I hope, my viewers. I've lived and studied both in Germany and Canada, before moving to Gainesville, Florida. Aside from painting and art history, my training includes botanical description, photography, and illustration, which accounts for the botanical focus of many of my paintings. My paintings are from life, pencil sketches, and reference photographs - often a combination of all three. I take a lot of time to develop compositions, but start the painting itself with only a few rough brush marks. Paint is applied alla prima with a palette knife, which makes creating vegetation textures and water reflections great fun While I enjoy the intense focus on the subject when observing details and drawing in pencil, the most gratifying process of creating art is "growing" a painting and watching it develop into a satisfying composition of natural shapes.
